今天，我们所处的是信息时代，尤其对商家来说，如果他不能有效地获取并处理信息，那么，他所不知道的信息可能就会成为竞争对手的优势来源。而信息系统（InformationSystem，IS）的目标就是研究信息技术、信息以及人三种因素如何协同工作，帮助人们完成与信息处理和信息管理相关的一切任务。虽然成熟的信息技术是信息系统的基础，但并不能成为企业成功的充分条件。要想开发成功的信息系统，必须在其中纳入先进的管理理念，同时还要强调使用信息系统的人的素质。
1.2 信息的重要性
目前，发达国家（On美国、英国）的就业模式已经发生了根本性变化。在19世纪初期和中期，作为工业化就业源的农业部门的重要性明显减弱。这直接导致了制造业就业比例的增加，使其在20世纪初期达到高峰。自19世纪以来，制造业的就业人员开始向两个专业转移：服务业和信息业，而增长较快的就是信息业。
在这种背景下，可以发现当今许多岗位几乎都与信息的采集、处理、提供和传输有关，包括保险、银行、会计以及各级政府单位等。任何一个邮政和电信部门工作的人员都要直接或间接地接触信息传递方面的业务。其他如旅游、零售、警察和军队与过去相比，也都要依靠更多的信息。即使在传统的制造行业，产品生产过程中劳动力比例减少的部分，也正是信息行业就业比例增加的部分。
在谈到信息的重要性时，我们可以引用戴尔计算机公司的创始人迈克尔·戴尔的一段话：
