中医妇科学是运用中医学的理论研究妇女生理、病理特点和妇女疾病的发生、发展规律，以及相应的诊断、治疗和预防方法的一门临床医学学科。中医理论包括阴阳五行理论，脏腑经络学说，气血津液学说，病因病机，辨证论治等理论，中医妇科学就是运用这些基本理论，对妇科的基本理论及各种疾病进行阐述。
“十问歌”中的“妇女尤问经带产”说明女性在疾病的发生方面有着特殊点。这与女性的生理特点密不可分。在解剖上女性有胞宫、胞脉、胞络、子门、产道、阴户等器官或组织，生理上有月经、妊娠、分娩、哺乳等特点，病理上有月经病、带下病、妊娠病、产后病、妇科杂病等不同病种。传统的中医妇科学的范围包括月经不调，带下病，妊娠，产后，乳疾，前阴诸疾及妇科杂病。概括起来不外经、带、胎、产、杂病等几大门类。《医宗金鉴·妇科心法要诀》说“男妇两科同一治，所异调经崩带癥，嗣育胎前并产后，前阴乳疾不相同”。这是对中医妇科学研究范围的高度概括和总结。
