Author Description

James W. Kalat，北卡罗来纳州立大学心理系教授，讲授心理学导论和生物心理学课程。他生于1946 年，于1968 年以优等成绩（summa cumlaude）获得杜克大学本科学位，并于1971 年从宾夕法尼亚大学获得博士学位。他是《心理学导论》（Introduction to Psychology，8e）的作者，并与Michelle Shiota 合著《情绪》（Emotion）一书。除了撰写教科书，他还在期刊上发表了关于味觉厌恶学习、心理学教学等主题的文章。他在前妻过世后再婚，现在膝下有亲生子女三人、继子女两人和孙子女三人。

1.睡与醒
电器只有在有人关掉它时才会停止运转，但大脑不同，它会周期性地启动或关闭自己。

2.睡眠
如果我们把睡眠看成是一部坏了的机器，我们不会关心它是由大脑的哪个部分产生的。但如果我们把睡眠看成是在演化过程中形成的、服务于特定功能的特异状态时，我们就会关心到底是怎样的脑机制在调节它。

3.睡眠与梦
即使我们不妄自菲薄对睡眠已有的了解，也要注意还有许多关于睡眠的基本问题没有得到解决。REM睡眠的功能是什么？做梦有什么功能吗，或者只是一种偶发事件？

4.体温
有的动物会做出许多令人困扰的行为，这些行为可从体温调节的角度给出解释。

5.渴
哺乳动物身体的70%由水构成。没有食物，人们有时可存活数周，但没有水却不可以。

6.饥饿
进食行为由多个脑区调控，由于这一系统如此复杂，它可能以多种方式产生错误。然而，系统的复杂性同时也提供了一种安全性保障。

性有什么好处呢？我知道，人们会从中得到享受。但是为什么我们进化出依靠性来繁殖而不是通过个体繁殖呢？生物学家的解释是：有性繁殖可以增加基因的变异度，从而可以更快速地适应环境的改变。

7.性与激素
神经系统通过突触将神经细胞一一联系。对于与性活动相关的一些信息，则需要调动激素。

8.性行为的多样性
今天的人比金西的年代更加意识到性的多样性，也更容易接受，但有的人还是无法容忍。生物学的研究不会告诉我们应该怎样对待他人，但是它可以帮助我们理解我们是如何的不同。
