Content Description

上世纪70年代初，妹尾河童在日本文化厅资助下，独自在欧洲游历一年，足迹遍及22国，边写边画，终成此书。在《窥视欧洲》中，河童表现出其一如既往的超强好奇心--一路乘坐的火车车厢内部结构及车长制服、行驶在街头的电车、移动的邮局、所住过的旅馆房间陈设、欧洲各地民居的窗户。都令他兴味盎然。
关于这一次欧洲之行，在《河童旅行素描本》及（《河童杂记本》中都曾有所涉及，如前者之“一投宿就开始画”及后者之“城堡赋”。而这一本《窥视欧洲》，姑且看成是前两个绘本的“未尽之言”吧。

Author Description

妹尾河童，日本当代具代表性的舞台设计家，1930年生于神户，1954年因舞台设计而崭露头角，此后活跃于戏剧、歌剧、芭蕾舞、音乐剧、电视等表演艺术领域，曾获“纪伊国屋演剧”、“山多利音乐”、“艺术祭优秀”、“兵库县文化”等众多奖项。

姜淑玲，（译者），台湾成功大学外文系毕业，日本国立东北大学语言学硕士，曾任台湾成大、高苑工商专等校的日文讲师，译有《炎之骑士》等书。

Book Abstract

我的一位女性友人曾到德国念音乐。她到了以后随即住进宿舍，一个人孤零零的谁也不认识，德语也不太行。她想试着和隔壁的德国女性建立友谊，便说：“我一个人在德国蛮寂寞的，想和你成为好朋友……”但是对方却回答：“能不能成为好朋友，我现在还没办法回答你；尤其我又从来没和东方人打过交道。我想，大概半年后就可以知道结果吧。”虽然事实的确如此，但对于正处在孤寂状态的友人来说，这么硬邦邦的回答和心中所设想的情况实在相去太远。
心灵颇受打击的她很快就被住在对面的意大利女性所“拯救”。有了前车之鉴，所以这次她在开口时便有点战战兢兢。想不到对方的回答竟然是：“好呀！我没有日本朋友，你可是排第一号的喔。从现在起，你就是我的好朋友了。如果有什么困难，可以随时来找我。对了，这礼拜六我教你做千层面吧。”简直是让人无法置信的正面答复啊。友人从那天起变得神采奕奕，算是到德国后头一次有雀跃不已的心情。她满心期待着四天后的礼拜六傍晚。
到了礼拜六约定的时刻，友人准时去敲意大利人的门，却没有回应。明明已经和她有约了，结果当天整晚都没回住处，隔天她才因为看到留在门上的纸条跑来道歉：“哦！真是对不起，男朋友约我出去，一时高兴过头就把你的事忘得一干二净了。

Introduction

在欧洲到处晃荡了一年，不知怎么搞的心里老有股歉意——因为这趟旅行不是自费的关系吧。
日本文化厅每年都有所谓的艺术家海外派遣研修计划；这次的独自旅行费用就是由该计划提供。对于此行能有多少收获，说实在的并没啥把握，所以心中老记挂着自己在花纳税人的钱。结果是在歌剧、芭蕾、戏剧、电视、电影等研修项目之外，其他各方面我也兴趣盎然；因为感到好奇的事物实在太多了，最后这趟旅行反而成了名副其实的“河童之旅”。
原本打算随兴地见识欧洲事物，多和当地人接触，但是到了之后，我才深深觉得对他们的认识实在是少得离谱。像当地人觉得理所当然的事物，我不是大吃一惊，就是好像有什么新发现一样。
风俗习惯不同，当然思想、意识与精神的结构也就相异，对于这样的差别会有兴趣是很自然的事；但是连饭店房间也成了我观察的对象。
