Book Abstract

本世纪以来，人们开始倡导“素质教育”。但是，“素质教育”也可以被理解为知识性的，如果是“知识教育”，那么近代至今并不缺少，何须重提呢?因此，倒不如以“教养教育”取代“素质教育”，更能应合现代社会的急迫需要。现代社会面对的主要问题，毫无疑问是过度张狂的利欲追求问题。这种过度张狂的、毫不掩饰的利欲追求，其思想渊源可以追溯到西方近代，像霍布斯、洛克等一批人物的理论。西方近代的这些思想家们，以“自然状态”为口号，把人从神的禁制下解放出来，以“每个个人”为口实，把个人从等级统治中解救出来;由之，在“自然状态”下的“每个个人”的共同性，便得以而且亦只可以归结为“好利恶害”“趋乐避苦”等一些功利性的追求。如果说近代思想家们在与中世纪被视为“黑暗时代”的抗争自有其进步意义，那么，在它以每个个人利欲追求为中心打开的俗世化路向越往现代走来，便越显得肆无忌惮与越加不择手段。每个个人再也无所畏惧，个人与他人、个人与社会、种族与种族、国家与国家，为获取最大利益而不得不处于无休止的对抗中。人类为自身的利益毫无节制地掠夺自然，同时也使人与自然的关系陷于愈益紧张的状态。难道这就是“人”，这就是人类的“理想”?人就只能生存于永无终了的利欲争夺，备受由争夺带来的喜怒哀乐的折磨么?庄子在其所作的《齐物论》中曾经叹息:“一受其成形，不亡以待尽。与物相刃相靡，其行尽如驰而莫之能止，不亦悲乎!”难道这是人愿意选择的生存处境吗?面对现代社会人类生存的这种困境，若要从中“走出”，毫无疑问需要重新回到“人是什么?”“如何才能成为人?”这样一些基本问题。这正是“教养教育”回应的问题。“教养教育”的宗旨，就在于要把人塑造成有超越功利的价值理想、对人类与自然世界有责任担当、有精神气质与心性涵养的一类人。而在“教养教育”的实施方面，中国古典文化能够提供极其丰富的思想资源。中国上古社会，殷商时期还是以自然血统为纽带建构起来的。入周以后，开启了“人文中国传统礼仪化成”的大格局。这一转变，恰恰体现了人“由自然向社会生成”的转变。人作为社会人必须被“文化”。由是需要有“教养教育”。“教养教育”通过各级学校实施。教育的内容，依《礼记•王制》所述:“乐正崇四术，立四教，顺先王《诗》《书》《礼》《乐》以造士。春秋教以《礼》《乐》，冬夏教以《诗》《书》。”所教以《诗》《书》《礼》《乐》为科目，这便是“教养教育”。由“教养教育”开创的时代，日本学者本田成之曾美称:此时学问与艺术完全融合，所谓艺术的教育的时代，是把人世的本身艺术化了的周朝的“郁郁乎文哉”的时代的想象。这样，较人间的杀伐性，使四海悉至于礼乐的生活，则是所谓“比屋可封”的理想的社会里，尤其是重音乐的大司乐时代，是周代文化达于最高调之时。
由“教养教育”所造之“士”，则极为国学大师钱穆所赞赏:大体言之，当时的贵族，对古代相传的宗教均已抱有一种开明而合理的见解。因此他们对于人生，亦有一个清晰而稳健的看法。当时的国家间，虽则不断以兵戎相见，而大体上一般趋势，则均重和平，守信义。外交上的文雅风流，更是表现出当时一般贵族文化上的修养。即在战争中，犹能不失他们重人道、讲礼貌、守信让之素养，而有时则成为一种当时独有的幽默。道义礼信，在当时的地位，显见超出于富强攻取之上。《左传》对于当时各国的国内政治，虽记载较少，而各国贵族阶级之私生活之记载，则流传甚富。他们理解之渊博，人格之完备，嘉言懿行，可资后代敬慕者，到处可见。春秋时代，实可说是中国古代贵族文化已发展到一种极优美、极高尚、极细腻雅致的时代。
春秋之后，中国古典社会也不时为功利与权力的争夺所困迫，以《诗》《书》《礼》《乐》为主导的“教养教育”也间或有所中断。然而每一个新政权建立，都必当以恢复“教养教育”为重要使命。中国古典社会得以“礼乐文明”著称，毫无疑问即由“教养教育”所营造。
当然，社会的现代走向，自有社会发展自己的内在逻辑，社会结构如何才来得更“公平”，也自有社会演变自身的某种脉络。“教养教育”面对社会的这种“现代性”，无疑需要有所调适。但是，人之为人，要讲求精神教养，讲求风流典雅，对他人、社群、自然要承担责任，这是任何时代都不可或缺的。当今社会既然演变得越来越“俗”，人越来越被工具化与功利化，这种需要就越来越显得紧迫。正是出自“教养教育”的这种紧迫需要，广州城市职业学院成立了国学院，致力于培养有人文涵养、有精神追求、又有一技之长的高素质人才，以期古典优秀文明得以持守和传播，学生既能立人，也能立业。国学院院长宋婕教授组织力量，编撰这套涉及中国古典思想、古典艺术的理论与实践的丛书，为开展“教养教育”的提供丰富资源，其努力更加可贵。因之，我特撰本文衷心祝贺这一套丛书的出版，并期盼广大读者从中获得良好教益!
