Introduction

三十年前,在先祖父太炎先生逝世五十周年之际,我编过两本文集———《章太炎生平与学术》(三联书店出版)及《章太炎生平与思想研究文选》(浙江人民出版社出版),选刊了他去世的半个世纪中,人们对他研究的代表作。沧海桑田,一下子三十年又过去了,在纪念先祖父去世八十周年之际,上海人民出版社准备出版一批研究太炎先生的学术成果,包括再版《章太炎生平与学术》,并拟新编近三十年来研究太炎先生新的学术成果,真是给繁荣学术文化做了件益事。
这三十年,是中国近代最开放的时代。学术研究,特别是人物研究,已不是“戴帽式”的“定性式”的研究,而是更开放的学术研究。我们研究他走过的曲折的道路,是为了让后人少走弯路,也是为了站在他的肩上去超越…
在灾难深重的中国近百年史上,他和许多先驱者一样,都是背着铺板,躺在泥泞的路上,为着让后人踩踏而过的人。他不是什么“先圣”或“教主”,更不是什么“疯子”;他与其他历史人物一样,也并不是什么“完人”,他就是他。八十年来,对他的评价是各种各样的,这本来是件正常的事,特别是像他这样一个人物,政治足迹遍历戊戌变法至抗日战争,几乎参与了这个时代的每一个政治事件。他的思想又那么深邃,著述又那么宏博,可是他的文字又是那样晦涩,给人们的研究带来了许多困难。因此,准确认识和评价他,始终是研究中国近代政治史、思想史、学术史的一大课题。八十年来,章太炎的研究取得了长足的进步。尤其是近些年,在新视野、新方法的带动与促进下,涌现了许多高质量的研究成果,不仅加深了人们对章太炎的认识,也使得章太炎的许多思想在新的时代新的形势下焕发了新的生机。
上海人民出版社希望我再参与《章太炎生平与学术》的续编工作,但我近几十年来,主要在从事台海问题研究,对章太炎研究的发言权已经不多。好在上海人民出版社《章太炎全集》责任编辑张钰翰博士,年少业精,他选择与推荐了一批论文,足以弥补我的缺憾,而终于编成本集。当然选编工作也难免顾此失彼,必有遗珠,敬请读者原谅。
