《文化怪杰·李叔同：圆月天心》：
根据李氏后人的回忆，李筱楼一生至少有过妻妾四人，而不是像一些研究者认为的那样是三位。李叔同的生母是李筱楼的第三房侧室王氏。在李叔同出生的时候，他的父亲已经是六十八岁的老人了，而他的母亲却只有二十虚岁。
李叔同是这个家中的第三个儿子。李家的长子是李筱楼的原配夫人姜氏所生，名文锦，但活的时间并不太长，很年轻便去世了。李家的次子名文熙，字桐冈，李筱楼的第二房侧室张氏所生，比李叔同年长十二岁，在李筱楼去世后成为李家的当家人，经营家族的产业，同时，他还是天津很有名气的中医。因为李筱楼去世的时候李叔同只有五岁，所以实际上，在他在这个大家庭中生活的时间里，李桐冈是他一位很重要的监护人。李叔同的启蒙教育也是从李桐冈那里开始的。他曾跟随这位兄长学习过《玉历钞传》《百孝图》《返性篇》《格言联璧》。据说，李桐冈幼时身体孱弱，家里总是担心他也会活不长，一般都认为这也是李筱楼后来又纳了李叔同的生母王氏的主要原因。但这样的看法也都是根据后人的分析，毕竟在当时的那个时代，大户人家纳妾也是很平常的事，特别是像李筱楼这样，算得上是功成名就的人。
李叔同的身份在这样的一个旧式家庭中是很微妙的。他自己对此也相当敏感。李端先生在他的文章中还提到，在李叔同于上海时期所使用过的四个皮箱上，都有“李庶同制”的字样。“庶”与“叔”同音，这样的写法，在李端先生看来是大有含义的，他以为父亲李叔同一直以他的庶出的身份为苦。而“叔同”中的“叔”字在中国的古时的用法中，就有排列在第三位的意思。李叔同是李家的第三个儿子，他的母亲是这个家中的第三房，于是“叔同”的字，在李端先生看来，就有了为父亲和祖母正名分的意思，因为，“叔同”有第三和位于其他位置的人相平等的意思。
这样的理解也许只是李端先生的揣摩，但作为一种说法也似乎有一定的道理。李叔同成年后曾对人说过，他的母亲一生很苦，他说的这苦中自然包含有母亲在大家庭中难堪的身份地位所带来的那种难以言传的辛酸。
李叔同的父亲李筱楼是一个很有慈善心的人，而且还信奉佛教，与出家人时有来往。在辞官回乡之后，他曾兴办义学供贫寒人家的子弟读书，另外，他还创办了慈善机构“备济社”，施舍钱财，赈济贫困。
由此，得到了“粮店后街李善人”的令誉。李叔同的母亲粗通文墨，为人谦和，对儿子的教育十分重视。
李叔同自很小的时候便随母亲背诵比较浅近的诗文。
父母是孩子的第一任老师，此言不谬。虽然父亲去世时，李叔同只有五岁，但在父亲主持下的家庭的生活氛围还是对李叔同的一生产生了很深刻的影响，尤其是父亲的宗教信仰，对李叔同的影响更是很大。至于他的母亲，由于在父亲去世后的日子里，这一对母子一直是无可选择地相依为命，所以无论是对母亲的感情，还是从母亲那里接受的影响，自然就是更深的了。
一八八四年的九月二十三日（夏历八月初五日），李筱楼病逝。他死于突发的痢疾。得病之后，李家也曾广延名医，但无论如何也没有使病人的病势得以缓解。在生命最后的时刻，李筱楼自觉去目就在眼前，于是，便坚持停止用药，命家人请来了僧人，为他诵《金刚经》，之后，安然谢世。在停灵在家的期间，年幼的李叔同曾进入停有父亲遗体的房间，“掀帏探问”，只见父亲的遗容貌若熟睡。
由李鸿章亲自为之“点主”来看，李筱楼的丧礼该是极其隆重无疑。灵柩在家中停了七天，每天都有僧人来家中做道场，超度死者的灵魂。这样的仪式在幼年的李叔同看来是十分的奇妙的。父亲的丧事完毕之后，他曾经召集一班孩童，模仿以游戏。他自己就扮作大和尚，如同演戏时的导演，指挥若定。
