埃米尔·路德维希(Emil Ludwig，1881－1948)，德国作家，籍通俗传记而名满天下。学法律出身，二十五岁始写剧本与诗歌。一战时期任德国报纸驻外记肯，游历欧美。切身体验混乱动荡之现实世界。注重人物曲折心路历程，擅写人物多面复杂性。文笔简练通俗，富于表现，感人罕深。所写传记熔真实与想象、历史与现实于一炉，既能让读者近距离观察其笔下人物，又能让读者从传主身上获取面对纷繁复杂世界之应对良策。
一九一八至一九一九年写出长篇小蜕《狄安娜》。一九二0年写出歌德传记，并藉此成为强调人物个性之“新传记派”作家。此类传记已译成英文者有《拿破仑》(1927)、《俾斯麦》(1927)、《威廉·霍亨索伦》(1917)、《歌德》(1928)、《人之子》(耶稣传记，1928)、《林肯》(1929)、《兴登堡》(1935)、《克娄巴特拉：一个女王的故事》(1937)、《罗斯福：命运和权力的研究》(1938)、《三幅画像：希特勒、墨索里尼、斯夫林》(1940)、《贝多芬》(1943)等。

Book Abstract

林肯经历复杂，这使他过早地了解到了这个世界的真实面貌，他亲身体会也深切了解世间的苦难和艰辛，他更加明白金钱的好处，自然他也知道竞选成功会给他带来什么样的实惠和利益；可是，即便如此他也不会为此而不择手段，这就是林肯的真实本性。
他看待问题总是一分为二，从不同的方面均衡有争议的意见，但是他这样做决不是出于保住自身的考虑，而总是有他自己的道理。有一个例子恰恰能证明这一点：
林肯和他的几位同仁主张将州府从现在的万达利亚迁至斯普林菲尔德。因为相比较于万达利亚的贫穷落后，斯普林菲尔德这座大城市将能为这个州的贸易、法制和基础建设提供更大的发展空间，而且迁址对林肯个人发展也是极其有利的。他觉得自己再也不能仅仅局限于一块闭塞的地盘，他需要到更宽广的地方去大展手脚，不但如此，他的政治活动圈子也需要不断扩大，他必须以自身的努力把这个圈子团聚在一起。但是，林肯的这一提案触及到了另外一些人的利益，于是他们站出来反对这一议案。两派你来我往，观点对峙，僵持不下，就在这时，手握关键几票的一帮人组成了第三派别，声称如果哪一方能满足他们的利益要求，他们就会转投谁的支持票。面对这一政治诱惑，林肯给予了坚定的答复：“你们纵然能够将我的头烧成灰撒到风中，或者把我的整个灵魂驱逐到黑暗又绝望的深渊中去，但是，你们休想让我屈服于我认为不对的事情，更别想迫使我接受这些事情变成事实，因为我只相信正义和真理，并为此坚持到底。”
这是多么豪迈的宣言，这也充分显示了林肯的性格：维护正义，坚持真理，斗志昂扬，逻辑缜密，为人直率并且为理想奋斗不止。在这场议会斗争中，林肯最终赢来了胜利。也正是林肯的这些性格特点使他能够在伊利诺伊州做出那么多令人称道的功绩来。
恰恰是林肯性格中质朴率真的一面，为他赢得了朋友的支持，他们更愿意围聚在林肯四周，对他投以真诚的信任。在议会休息所在地，常常有一堆人围在林肯身旁，饶有兴致地听林肯讲那些奇闻趣事，总能把人们逗得哈哈大笑。当他讲累了，就会让人趁机来上一段小提琴独奏，他则静静地坐在椅子上慢慢地品味着音乐，这总会使他感到特别愉悦。这种场合开始大约一小时左右就会进入一个高潮，道格拉斯那时会拉上几个人跳上桌子，来上段兴致勃勃的恰恰舞，兴之所至还把餐具茶具打个粉碎以图痛快。而这时的林肯总是很平静，他默默地坐在一边，既不大口地狂饮，也不会像道格拉斯他们那样站在桌子上跳恰恰。但是，当他拿自己与眼前这些轻浮的人作比较后，他就会信心陡增。所以，有一次林肯对自己的一位好友说了这样一句话：“我要成为伊利诺伊州的改革先锋!”
