当信陵君领兵救赵的时候，在被围困的邯郸城中，有一位名叫新垣衍的魏国使者，他是魏王派来劝说平原君向秦国屈服的。新垣衍游说赵国臣服秦国，尊秦王为帝，他还说，只要赵国和魏国都能臣服秦国，秦国自然会撤兵。平原君差不多被说动了。但在这座围城中，还有一位坚定抵抗秦国的英雄，这就是齐国人鲁仲连，他听说魏王派使臣来游说赵国臣服秦国，并打算尊秦王为帝，便坚决求见这位主降派新垣衍。鲁仲连见到新垣衍后，首先表明自己的立场，他说：“秦国是个抛弃礼义、没有人道、极端专制和对外侵略的国家，其国王有无限的权力，像对奴隶一样役使全国的百姓和有识之士，为其无止境地服务。如果秦王真的成为了皇帝，统治全国，我立刻蹈东海而死，因为在秦王的统治下毫无人权可言，我宁愿做一个自由人站着死，不愿作一个奴隶跪着求生。” 鲁仲连郑重地说：“目前唯一拯救赵国免于亡国的办法是向相邻的燕国、魏国求援，同时派急使驰往较远的齐国和楚国，请他们立即发兵救赵。” 新垣衍说：“燕、齐、楚等国是否发兵救赵我不知道，但我知道的是，魏王已经决定尊秦王为帝，不发兵了。” 鲁仲连叹道：“魏王此念差矣！”他继续说，“新垣衍先生，您预计到这样做的可怕后果吗？一旦尊秦王为帝，秦王就成了天子，和往昔的周天子的权力相等，而魏王、赵王则成了秦王的诸侯，诸侯和天子相比，地位矮了一大截，据历史资料，周天子曾多次烹杀诸侯，按照当今秦国严苛的法律，魏王、赵王侍奉秦国稍有差池，就有被秦王烹杀的可能。即使暂时没有被秦王烹杀，日子也是很不好过的：秦王可以派自己的心腹到魏、赵等国担任重要官职，掌管这些国家的政治、经济和外交，魏、赵等国的君主形同傀儡，将毫无实权。假如秦王的心腹指挥他们向东走，他们就不敢向西一步。他们只能跟着指挥棒转。秦王还可以打发秦国的美女来充当魏、赵等国国君的妃嫔，这些美女其实是间谍，她们监视着魏、赵等国国君的一举一动，这么一来，魏、赵等国国君的处境和囚徒差不多，活着还有什么意思呢？” 鲁仲连一席话说得新垣衍如梦初醒，连忙起身拜谢道：“最初我以为先生是一个庸俗的靠嘴巴吃饭的人，现在才知道先生是天下第一的英雄。我请求让我归国，从此再不提尊秦王为帝的馊主意了。”新垣衍灰溜溜地走后，平原君在鲁仲连的影响下，整顿队伍，准备死战，秦军通过间谍闻知这种新的变化，立即退军五十里。正好这时信陵君带领魏国的救兵到了，与守城的赵军里应外合，攻击秦军，秦军战不过，就退回国内去了。事后，平原君想要给鲁仲连封官，鲁仲连再三辞让。平原君摆下酒席，请鲁仲连饮酒，拿出千金酬谢鲁仲连，鲁仲连也不肯接受，笑着说：“作为一位天下有名的英雄豪士，之所以能被社会看重，就是因为能给别人排忧解难，救困扶危，而不取报酬。如果取了报酬，就沦为一个追求利润的商人了，我鲁仲连才不想干商贾的事情呢！”就这样辞别了平原君，以后也再没有在赵国露面。为被侵略的国家出谋划策，使之能击退侵略者，同时又不获取丝毫胜利果实，这就是鲁仲连的品格难能可贵的地方；与暴政势不两立，如果暴政夺得天下，就蹈海而死，决不苟全性命，由此可见鲁仲连的气节的伟大。鲁仲连是司马迁在《史记》中认真刻画的英雄人物之一，对后世影响深远。晋代的左思曾以“功成耻受赏，高节卓不群”的诗句来赞美鲁仲连；唐代的李白在《古风五十九首之十》中极力推崇鲁仲连“却秦振英声”的壮举。周恩来也在《大江歌罢棹头东》中借用“难酬蹈海亦英雄”的鲁仲连遗事，抒发革命情怀。P6-7
