Author Description

Book Abstract

导言

弗兰克.奥康纳曾写过一本颇富争议的短篇小说论集《孤独的声音》（1963），此书至今仍然促使我要做一番有意义的争论。总是令我不解的是，奥康纳在论及莎士比亚的时候真是精彩之极，然而《孤独的声音》从任何方面来看都不及《莎士比亚的发展》，后者是一本关于这位史上最伟大作家的令人敬佩的文学研究之作。或许，奥康纳和短篇小说艺术的距离太近，他把它视之为“被淹没的人群”中传出的孤独的声音。奥康纳不得不相信：

……短篇小说因其自身浪漫的、个人主义的、不妥协的的性质——远离了大众。

从这一描述中我可以看见D.H.劳伦斯和詹姆斯.乔伊斯，海明威和凯瑟琳.安妮.波特，但是我看不到汉斯?克里斯蒂安?安徒生、屠格涅夫、马克.吐温、托尔斯泰、吉卜林和艾萨克?巴别尔。抒情诗歌从文艺复兴到浪漫主义，乃至到W.B.叶芝，均出自一座美好的高塔，但是短篇小说却未必要反映任何一种特殊的社会辩证法。

劳伦斯，作为说书人，传承了托马斯?哈代的特点，而詹姆斯结合了屠格涅夫和霍桑的特点。但是劳伦斯和詹姆斯都不是奇异怪诞派的作家，如H.C.安德森、爱伦?坡、果戈里、刘易斯?卡罗尔、卡夫卡和博尔赫斯。如果说短篇小说的主要传统是契诃夫式的，与之相对的模式就是卡夫卡—博尔赫斯式的、梦魇般的怪诞幻象。劳伦斯和詹姆斯显示出契诃夫的特点，两人都不是博尔赫斯的先驱。

弗兰克?奥康纳觉得短篇小说是契诃夫式的艺术，充斥着“新的被淹没的人群，有医生、教师，有时还有牧师”。然而在读契诃夫的时候，我感到的是每一个人都被孤独和误解所淹没。奥康纳责备吉卜林太多地顾及周围人们的感觉，在我看来奥康纳似乎逻辑不通。短篇小说必须要写人的孤独才能经久流传吗？

马克.吐温、托马斯.曼、海明威、福克纳、以及司各特?菲茨杰拉德，他们都深知孤独的滋味，但是对我来说，那几乎不是他们任何一个作为小说家关注的中心。劳伦斯告诉我们要相信故事，而不是艺术家，伟大的故事很少只是反映一种人性特征。我在想，这卷书里评论的所有故事哪一篇是我最喜欢的呢？是巴别尔的《在敖德萨是怎样的》还是汉斯?克里斯蒂安?安徒生的《牙痛姑妈》呢？巴别尔的本亚?科瑞克和魔王般的牙痛姑妈，他们根本就谈不上是被淹没的声音。也许短篇小说只是像一个又一个奇迹彼此相联吧。
