Author Description

亨利·戴维·梭罗（Henry David Thoreau），1817年7月12日生于美国马萨诸塞州康科德镇一个商人家庭。康科德四季风景如画，梭罗经常喜欢到野外去，独自徘徊在树木花草、鸟兽鱼虫之间，与大自然结下了不解之缘。1833年他进入哈佛大学，好学不倦，是班里的优等生；1837年毕业后，他返回故乡任教两年（1838—1840年），还当过乡村土地测量员。他毕生酷爱散步、观察与思考，写下了大量日记，积累了他日后进行创作的丰富素材。他与大作家爱默生（RalphWaldoEm—erson，1803一1882年）相契，于1841—1843年住在爱默生家里，成为爱默生的门生兼助手。因此，他弃教从文，在爱默生的激励下，开始写诗与论说文，起初给超验主义杂志《日晷》撰稿，随后也给其他报刊撰写文章。1845年，他在离康科德两英里远的瓦尔登湖畔亲手搭建一间小木屋，在那里度过的两年多的岁月中，完成了两部作品《康科德河与梅里麦克河上一周》和《瓦尔登湖，或林居纪事》（均在他生前出版）。1847年梭罗返回康科德居住，其后就在故乡从事写作、讲学及观察、研究当地动植物，偶尔也出门作短程旅行，以扩充见闻，为日后创作打下坚实基础。有时，他还得上父亲的铅笔工厂去挣点钱维持生活。1862年5月6日，梭罗因患肺结核不幸去世，年仅44岁。

有时候，我暗自纳闷，我们怎能如此轻率地一我几乎要说——致力于推行那种万恶不赦、但有点陌生的所谓“黑奴制”，有那么多精明而诡秘的奴隶主在奴役南方和北方的奴隶。南方监工良心固然坏，北方监工良心更要坏，但是话又说回来，良心最最坏的还是你成为你自己的奴隶监工。
胡扯什么人身上的神性！看一看大路上的车把式夜以继日地往市场赶，难道他心里还有什么神性在激动吗？他的最高职责是给驮马喂料添水！跟他的运货收益相比，他的命运算得了什么？他还不是在给一个炙手可热的乡绅赶车吗？他要什么神性呢？他要什么永世不朽？照他那副畏畏缩缩、鬼鬼祟祟的德行，整天价闹不清楚自己干吗胆战心惊，哪来什么不朽和神性，他仅仅是以奴隶和囚犯自居，以自己干的活儿挣个好口碑罢了。

我们使用教理问答式的语言思考什么是人生的宗旨，什么是真正的生活必需品和生活资料时，仿佛人们已经深思熟虑地选择了这种生活的共同方式，因为他们就是喜欢这种方式，而别的则一概不喜欢。其实，他们心里也明白，合此以外，别无选择。不过，神志清健的人都知道日出山河清。捐弃我们的偏见，从来不算为时太晚。任何一种思考方式或者行为方式，不管它有多么古老，如无确证都是不可信的。今天人人附和或者予以默认的真理，明天却有可能成为谬论，而这种谬论只不过是缥缈烟雾，有人却坚信，那是雨云，会把甘霖洒向他们的农田。老人说你不能做的事，你不妨试一试，却发现你是能做的。老人有老办法，新人有新招数。古人也许不知道添上燃料，火苗儿就灭不了；新人会在火车锅炉底下放上一点干柴，就像鸟儿似的绕着地球飞转，正如老话所说：气死老头子。其实，老年人未必比年轻人更有资格做导师，因为老年人一生中获益也不见得比失去的更多。人们几乎可以质疑，即使是最聪明的人从生活中又能感悟出多少具有绝对价值的东西呢？说实话，老年人没有什么至关紧要的忠告给年轻人的，他们自己的经验如此不够完美，他们一生中又遭到如此惨败，他们必须承认那都是咎由自取；也许他们还有一些有悖于那种经验的信心，可惜他们已经不再年轻了。我在这个星球上已生活过三十多年，还没有听到我的长辈说过一句话，可谓有价值的，乃至于热忱的忠告。他们什么都没有告诉过我，也许他们对我说不出什么深中肯綮的话。这就是生活，一个在很大程度上我还没有尝试过的实验；他们倒是尝试过了，但对我丝毫无益。如果说我有什么自以为有价值的经验，我一定会想，这可是我的贤师们都还没有说过的呢。
