省俭之道
我们能用一千种简单的试验来测定生命；比如，使我种的豆子成熟的，同时也照亮包括地球在内的整个太阳系的，是同一个太阳。如果牢记了这一点，就能少犯很多错误。可我在豆子地里锄草的时候，根本没有这样去思考。星星是很多奇异的三角形的尖顶啊！在浩茫宇宙的每一个角落里，许多不同的物种相距遥远，却又在同一时刻关注同一个事物！大自然和人生是千变万化的，这就如同我们的各种体制一样。有谁能预测出别人的命运呢？一瞬之间，我们彼此相望，难道还有比这更伟大的奇迹吗？在一个小时里，我们本应该经历了这个世界的所有时代，甚至经历所有时代中的所有世界。历史、诗歌、神话！——读别人的经验，能像读它们那样使人惊奇和增长见识吗？我可不知道。
大部分我的邻居认为好的东西，却被我的灵魂认定为坏的，若说有什么需要我忏悔的，恰恰是我善良的品行。是哪个魔鬼迷惑了我，使我的品行这么善良呢？老年人啊，也许你说的是你自认为最睿智的话——毕竟你活了七十年，活得也还体面——但有一种不可抗拒的声音萦绕在我的耳边，叫我不要听你的这一套。上代人的业绩，就如搁浅的破船一般：被新一代人抛弃了。
我认为，我们可以笃信的事物，比我们实际上相信的更多。我们少关心一点自己，就能诚心实意地多关心一下别人。大自然既能适应我们的优点，也能包容我们的缺点。有些人成天没完没了地焦虑、紧张，这几乎成了一种无法治愈的顽疾。喜欢夸耀自己从事的工作是多么重要，这是我们的天性；然而我们没有做的工作还有许多呢！若是哪天我们病倒了，又该怎么办呢？我们是多么小心谨慎！我们决心不靠信仰生活，尽量避开它；白El里我们时刻警惕，到了晚上又违心地去祈祷，把自己交付给捉摸不定的命数。我们被逼着周到而诚恳地生活，要崇敬自己的生活，又要否定一切变革的可能。我们说，生活方式只能有这一种，然而，从圆心画出的半径有多少条，生活的方式就应该有多少种。所有的变革都是奇迹，值得我们思考。孔子言：“知之为知之，不知为不知，是知也。
”当一个人将自己想出来的事实归纳为自己所理解的事实时，我敢预言，所有人最后都会把自己的生活建造在这样的基础上。
我们来思考一下，前面我所提到的大多数人的烦恼和忧愁中，大部分是什么？其中需要我们烦心的，或者至少要谨慎对待的又有多少呢？虽然我们生活的社会只是表面文明罢了，但若我们能体验一番原始的或者蛮荒的生活——即使只是为了弄明白生活的必需品有些什么，通过什么方式可以获取它们；甚至翻翻商人们的旧流水账，看看人们最常买的商品是什么，商店里有哪些存货，也就是说，买卖量最大的杂货是什么，还是很有好处的，因为人类生存的基本法则并没有随着时代的演变而发生多少改变，就如我们的骨骼同我们祖先的骨骼相比并没有多大的不同一样。
生活必需品，从字面上理解，指的是人通过努力而获得的一切物品；或者它从开始就很重要，或者在长期使用后变成了必需品。当然曾有人尝试不依靠它生活，但无论是因为野蛮、贫穷，还是出于某种哲学上的缘故，这样去做的人也非常少。从这个意义上看，对许多人来说，真正的生活必需品只有一种，那就是食物。生活在大草原上的野牛的必需品，就是可以咀嚼的青草和能饮用的水，至多再加上一处位于丛林或山间的栖身之所。食物、栖身地，这就是兽类的生存需求。在一般情况下，人类的生活必需品可以准确分为食物、住所、衣服和燃料几类；如果缺少这些东西，我们根本不能自由地思考真正的人生问题，更别说取得成功了。人类发明的不仅有房子，还有衣服、熟食。人也许在偶然中发现火可以取暖，后来就学会了怎样使用火。早期，火是一种奢侈品，但当人们习惯了用火取暖后，火就成为生活的必需品了。同样，猫狗也获得了这种第二天性，这是我们已经看到的事实。居住和穿着都合适，我们才能合理地保持身体的热量；若是我们住得太暖，穿得太多，或者烤太热的火，换句话说，就是外部的热度比我们体内的温度高得多，那岂不是要变成烤人肉了？谈起火地岛的原住民时，自然科学家达尔文这样描述道：自己和同伴们穿着厚实的衣服，围坐在火堆旁，一点也没觉得热，而令人吃惊的是，在离火堆很远的地方，那些不着寸缕的土著人却“被火焰烘烤得浑身冒汗了”。同样，据说欧洲人穿着衣服还冻得发抖，而新荷兰人光着身体行走却安然无恙。野蛮人的强健不能与文明人的聪慧结合起来吗？用李比希的话说，人的身体就好比一只火炉，食物就是维持肺部内燃的燃料。我们在冷天里多吃，热天里少吃。动物的体温是内部缓慢消耗的结果，一旦内耗过快，疾病和死亡就降临了；相反，若是燃料缺乏，或者通风不畅，火就会熄灭。自然，生命的体温与火不能混为一谈，用作比喻说说也就罢了。因而，从前面的叙述来看，“动物的生命”与“动物的体温”这两种说法几乎相同。食物被当作保持体内热量的燃料——煮熟食物也需要燃料，熟食被吞人身体，从而增加体内的热量——除此之外，衣服和住所的作用，就是保持由燃料产生和吸收的热量。
