《迦陵谈诗》的姊妹篇，收录作者有关中国古典诗歌之理论研究及批评，为其多年来从事诗词创作及研究的心得。书后有“后叙”长文，总结了自己从主观到客观，从感性到知性，从欣赏到理论，从为己到为人的赏诗历程。作者认为，诗歌*重要的，是感发生命之本质，对于诗歌的评赏，当以其所传达之感发生命的浅深薄厚为品第标准，评论者则当于知性与感性的结合中，以引发读者达致生生不已的感动效果为要务。

Author Description

叶嘉莹，号迦陵。1924年生于北京书香世家，1945年毕业于辅仁大学国文系，师从诗词名家顾随。1954年起任教台湾大学，1966年应邀赴美国哈佛大学和密西根州立大学任客座教授。1969年移居加拿大，1989年当选为加拿大皇家学会院士。1979年开始回中国大陆讲学，三十多年来，先后在北京大学、南开大学、复旦大学、南京大学、四川大学等数十所大学讲学。1996年在南开大学创办“中华古典文化研究所”；1999年以其退休金，以恩师顾随名号设立“驼庵奖学金”。

Book Abstract

中国诗歌的真正好处和特色，并不是只用西方的理论和模式就可以完全衡量出来的，这主要是因为东西方的诗歌，各有不同的传统。
中国早期的诗歌，自《诗经》和《楚辞》开始，一向便都是以抒情为主的。西方早期希腊的诗歌则是以长篇的叙事史诗和戏剧为主的，所以中国之所谓“诗”，与西方之所谓“poetry”，基本上的范畴和性质就并不完全相同，再加之中国古典诗之格律一般都极为严整，中国古典诗人的创作，常是心中之感发与其熟诵默记之诗律二者之间的一种因缘凑泊的自然的结合；而西方之诗律则较有更多自由安排的余地，所以中国诗更重视自然的感发，西洋诗则更重视人工的安排。
中国的诗论自《毛诗·大序》开始，便以“言志”及“情动于中，而形于言”之内心的感发为主要传统，而西方之诗论，则自亚里士多德之《诗学》开始，就重悲剧之类型及结构之安排。即以我们在上面所举引的，西方文学批评中有关“形象”之使用的这一系列批评术语而言，便已可看出他们对安排技巧的重视。
他们的分类虽较中国为细密，所用的术语也显得多彩多姿，可是如果按照我们依感发之性质为“赋”、“比”、“兴”三个名称所下的界说而言，则所有西方这些多彩多姿的批评术语，无论是明喻、隐喻、转喻、象征、拟人、举隅、寓托、外应物象等，就感发之性质而言，它们却实在都是属于先有了情意，然后才选用其中的一种技巧或模式来完成形象之表达的。
