Author Description

陈树培，新华社译审，资深翻译家，1970年毕业于武汉大学外文系英文专业，1973年分配到新华社后，一直从事英汉新闻翻译和审稿定稿工作，翻译和审校美国总统的国情咨文和重要演说、联合国的声明和决议、英美报刊重头文章和社论等，新闻译稿涉及国际政治、经济、科技、军事、文化等诸多方面，审译稿累计数千万字。翻译出版了多部中长篇小说及其他译著，如《帝国109》（合译）、《爱情的结局》和《雪莱情史》（合译）等。2007年出版《英汉报刊翻译常见错误》的著作，获得好评。2010年获“资深翻译家”荣誉证书。从1986年到1999年先后任新华社常驻菲律宾、斯里兰卡和埃及记者，在报纸杂志上发表了大量通讯、特写、散文、随笔等，出版了《笔墨海外情》国际随笔集。

习语翻译常见错误

关于英语习语的概念，《英语习语大词典》在序言中说得很清楚：英语的idiom在汉语里相应的说法是“成语”或“习语”。成语（习语）是在语义上和语法上受到限制的词组或句子，它们作为一个单位来使用。从语义学上看，成语的意义不是其中单个词的意义的总和；从语法上看，其中的词不允许任意变换，例如，英语的it’s raining cats and dogs 是“倾盆大雨”的意思，不是“下猫和狗”；不允许变换成it’s raining a cat and a dog，也不允许变换成it’s raining dogs and cats；汉语里如“七嘴八舌”表示“人多言杂”，不是“七张嘴八个舌头”，不允许说成“七舌八嘴”或“嘴七舌八”。所以有人把它叫做“现成的话语”，另外还有一种说法是“惯用组合”。
在本部分中，我们所选的例子都是在英语词组、书面成语、口语成语、俚语、短语、尤其是动词短语等我们称之为习语的翻译上有错误或有问题的句子。
从下面的例子中大家可以看到，英文习语的翻译最常见的错误就在于望文生义。比如score这个词，它有“二十”的意思，以为变成复数scores of就是“几十”，殊不知词典上的释义是“许多、大量”。可见，望文生义想当然在英语习语翻译中是很容易出错的。还有，英文的动词短语用得很广，可对我们中国人来说很头疼，一不小心就会闹笑话。如果光从字面上理解往往就会弄错。动词短语to tell sb. off就是个明显的例子。光从字面上看，似乎是“叫某人走开”，可一查词典根本就没这个意思。

这个例子有几个习语要注意。
1 into the bargain是个习语，没有在买卖中讨价还价的意思。into the bargain 同 in the bargain是一样的，意思是“而且，另外还”。例如：
If you have anything to do with such a scheme you’ll endanger your good name, and probably lose your money into the bargain.
如果在这样一起阴谋案中你有所牵连的话，你就有身败名裂的危险，说不定还要倾家荡产哩！
2 to cast a spell over 是“迷住”的意思。
3 doing a turn on，turn 在这里是“转身、转体动作”的意思，译得模糊一点就是“演奏”。

本书前身是《英汉报刊翻译常见错误》，这次作了全面修订，考虑到本书涉及的多是外电、外报、外刊、外网等英汉新闻翻译的方方面面，不仅仅是报刊翻译，故将书名改为《英汉新闻翻译常见错误》。
本书是由有四十年译龄的新华社译审主编的英汉翻译参考书。本书著者凭借几十年在新华社从事英汉翻译和审稿定稿的经验教训，从外报外网新闻和美国中长篇小说中摘出一些英文例句，点评分析中文译文中的各种问题与常见错误，其中既有常用习语、词语和句型翻译的常见错误，又有定语从句和被动语态翻译的常见问题，还有英文专有名词翻译的原则和一些翻译小技巧，涉及英汉新闻翻译的各个方面。
本书内容有下面几大亮点：
第一，英文材料较新，地地道道，原汁原味，是学习地道英语的好材料。本书所收集的几百个例句大多选自英美较新新闻稿件（还有中长篇小说）。稿件的作者大多是知名记者、评论家、政治家和专栏作家。例句本身看似平常，但译起来却很容易出错。这些例句都可以作为读者学习英汉翻译的练习材料。
第二，每个例句都有两种中译文，即“原译”与“改译”，供读者比较辨析。长期的翻译实践使我们懂得，中译文是无止境的，总有更好更漂亮的译文。书中例句的“改译”未必句句都能做到与原文斤两悉称，毫无差异，但求其较准确表达原意正是著者的用心所在。希望通过这些不成熟的参考译文引来读者更好更理想的译文。抛砖引玉是著者的本意。
第三，对例句的译文加以点评分析并对例句中的语言点逐一阐释。这些语言点乍一看很熟悉，但却容易成为翻译中的陷阱，造成误译。本书是以各个例句在翻译中出现的问题而引人注目的，所以在点评时紧扣出现的问题展开评析。点评力求简明扼要，有针对性，尽量不作语法方面泛泛的分析。这些点评有些是著者在长期改稿中有所领悟的经验之谈，有的则是出错后经过师友匡谬的记录。衷心希望这些点评对于英语学习者能有一些参考与借鉴作用，同时也希望能得到读者的匡正与指教。
第四，本书题材多样，内容广泛，这是新华社英汉新闻翻译的工作性质所决定的。新华社的英汉翻译绝大多数是新闻稿件，选自外电、外报、外刊、外网，涉及国际政治、经济、军事、科技、文化、体育等不同领域，任务重，稿量大，涉及面广，要求有多方面知识素养，也就是“杂家”。
值得一提的是，本书第六章“英文专有名词翻译常见错误”，是用一些具体例句谈谈英语中的人名、地名、机构名称、企业名称、媒体名称和其他各种专有名词在翻译时如何处理。英文译名也是新华社英汉新闻翻译的一大特色。
第五，本书的书名已标明本书讲的是“常见错误”，所涉及的都是英汉翻译中最常用、最常见和最基本的东西。这是本书的定位，是选择例句的主要标准，也是贯穿全书的指导思想。越是常见的东西有时越容易出错，原因主要在于望文生义和马虎大意。本书自始至终反复强调英汉翻译要小心谨慎、多查词典，道理就在这里。
需要说明的是，既然书中所引用的英文例句大多来自西方报刊网络，当然有其立场观点，我们仅仅是从学习英文和探讨英汉翻译的角度来谈的，只就英文论英文，就译文论译文，不涉及任何政治立场问题。我们对书中部分例句注明了出处。
本书自2007年出版以来一直没有修订，这次作了较全面的修订补充，尤其是第一章“习语翻译常见错误”，补充了不少习语，而且补充的习语还加上了英文解释，有助于读者对习语的理解运用。其他各章则作了修订，改正了原先的一些错误，删除了个别例句，附录也删去了，从而使本书内容更紧凑，更完善，针对性更强。
有翻译行家反映，本书的写法市面上少见，因为书店讲英汉翻译的书大多侧重理论，缺乏翻译和改稿的经历和素材，而这正是本书著者因长期在新华社的改稿经历所具有的优势。读者大多喜欢这种写法，认为这种书对初涉翻译者效果更好。网上对本书的评论大多也是肯定的。北京外国语大学英语学院教授、全国翻译证书考试委员会副主任陈德彰先生在当当网上留下的评论颇有代表性：“值得一读。真正学翻译的人，包括已在从事翻译的人，最好看看这一本和类似的书，会大有益处。我是教了几十年翻译的北外教师，不会让你上当的。”
