琼斯生日那天，他的妻子为他安排了一次夏威夷双人游。而詹姆斯的妻子却很少跟丈夫讲话，这让他们两个人的心里都蒙上了巨大的阴影。
琼斯看起来好极了——既健康又健美。这可能是因为他总是打高尔夫和晒太阳吧。他每个星期都晨跑三四次。而詹姆斯一低头，却发现自己已经长出了啤酒肚。不仅如此，他还感到一种来自骨子里的疲惫。由于经常体力透支，所以詹姆斯不得不借助于喝咖啡提神。他初时喜欢喝咖啡，是觉得那能够让他精神抖擞；可过了一段时间之后，由于喝得太多，他发现咖啡只会让自己头昏脑涨。
在工作的时候，琼斯似乎总是在跟同事们聊天、开玩笑。他还抽空参加了公司和社区的许多活动。很明显，他喜欢指导别人，喜欢花时间跟人们交流。可詹姆斯却没有时间，而且即便能抽出一些空闲时间，他也没有多余的精力了。渐渐地，他只想过完白天，然后回到家里蒙头大睡。
