彼得·德鲁克，管理学科开创者，他被尊为“大师中的大师”、“现代管理学之父”，他的思想传播影响了130多个国家；他称自己是“社会生态学家”，他对社会学和经济学的影响深远，他的著作架起了从工业时代到知识时代的桥梁。
1909年彼得·德鲁克生于维也纳的一个书香门第，1931年获法兰克福大学国际法博士学位，1937年与他的德国校友多丽丝结婚，并移居美国，终身以教书、著书和咨询为业。
在美国他曾担任由美国银行和保险公司组成的财团的经济学者，以及美国通用汽车公司、克莱斯勒公司、IBM公司等大企业的管理顾问。为纪念其在管理领域的杰出贡献，克莱蒙特大学的管理研究生院以他的名字命名；为表彰他为非营利领域所带来的巨大影响，国际慈善机构“救世军”授予德鲁克救世军奖项“伊万婕琳·布斯奖”。
他曾连续20年每月为《华尔街日报》撰写专栏文章，一生在《哈佛商业评论》上共发表38篇文章，至今无人打破这项纪录。他著述颇丰，包括《管理的实践》《卓有成效的管理者》《管理：使命、责任、实务》《旁观者》等几十本著作，以30余种文字出版，总销售量超过600万册。其中《管理的实践》奠定了他作为管理学科开创者的地位，而《卓有成效的管理者》已成为全球管理者必读经典。
他曾7次获得“麦肯锡奖”；2002年6月2013，获得当年的“总统自由勋章”，这是美国公民所能获得的至高荣誉。
20世纪80年代，德鲁克思想被引入中国；2004年，德鲁克管理学全面进入中国的管理教育。
2005年11月11日，德鲁克在加州克莱蒙特的家中溘然长逝，享年95岁。

第1章卓有成效是可以学会的
管理者的工作必须要卓有成效。推敲起来，“使某项工作产生效益”（toeffect）和“完成某项工作”（toexecute），可视为同义词。身为管理者，不管是企业主管、医院主管、政府机构主管、工会主管、学校主管，还是军事机构主管，首先必须要按时做完该做的事情。换言之，管理者做事必须有效。
然而，值得注意的是，在担任管理职位的人中，真正卓有成效者，殊不多见。一般来说，管理者普遍才智较高、想象力丰富，并具有很高的知识水准。但是一个人的有效性，与他的智力、想象力或知识之间，几乎没有太大的关联。有才能的人往往最为无效，因为他们没有认识到才能本身并不是成果。他们也不知道，一个人的才能，只有通过有条理、有系统的工作，才有可能产生效益。相反，在每一个机构中，总会有一些极为有效的勤勉人士，当别人忙得晕头转向的时候（一般人常误以为忙碌就是有干劲的表现），那些有效的勤勉人士却像龟兔赛跑的童话一样，脚踏实地，一步一个脚印，率先到达目的地。
智力、想象力及知识，都是我们重要的资源。但是，资源本身是有一定局限性的，只有通过管理者卓有成效的工作，才能将这些资源转化为成果。
的确，谁也不知道一位知识工作者在想些什么。然而，思考却正是他的本分，他既然是在思考，他就是在工作。
知识工作者的工作动力，取决于他是否具有有效性，及他在工作中是否能有所成就。如果他的工作缺少有效性，那么他对做好工作和做出贡献的热情很快就会消退，他将成为朝九晚五在办公室消磨时间的人。
知识工作者并不生产本身具有效用的产品。他不生产有形的产品，例如挖一条水沟、制造一双鞋或一个机械零件。他生产的是知识、创意和信息。这样的产品本身并无用途，只有通过另一位知识工作者，把他的产品当做投入，并转化为另一种产出，它们才具有实际的意义。再伟大的智慧，如果不能应用在行动上，也将只是毫无意义的资料。因此，知识工作者必须做到一些体力工作者不需要做的事，他必须具有有效性。而且，他不能只顾到他的产品本身的效用。
知识工作者是一项特殊的“生产要素”，通过这项生产要素，当今一些高度发达的社会和经济实体，如美国、日本和西欧国家，才得以获得及保持了强大的竞争力。
美国是这方面的典型，美国今天占优势的资源当首推教育。美国的教育虽然仍有很多有待改进的地方，但它的投入确实是其他较贫穷的国家所望尘莫及的。美国在教育方面投资之庞大，可以说是史无前例。培养一位自然科学方面的博士，约需10万到20万美元的社会投资。即使是培养一位没什么特殊职业技能的大学毕业生，也得花费5万美元以上。这种投资，只有非常富足的社会才能负担。
所以，在美国这个最富足的社会中，教育就是它所拥有的一项真正的优势。当然这一优势能否得到充分发挥，还取决于知识工作者的工作是否卓有成效。而所谓知识工作者的生产力，就是“做好该做的事情”的能力，也就是有效性。

我总是感觉自己没有资格为德鲁克先生的著作写序，但是机械工业出版社华章分社的邀稿盛情难却，此外，作为德鲁克先生生前少数耳提面命过的中国人之一，我也有责任和大家分享我从他那里得到的启迪。
改革开放初期，德鲁克夫妇来过中国。对比第二次世界大战后欧洲人从战争创伤的心理阴影中复原的艰难过程，他遇到的中国人充满活力和乐观精神，这一点令他惊讶不已。十年前我刚认识德鲁克先生时，他告诉我，世界在苏联解体后，只有美国一国独强的局面是不健康的，应该至少还有另一股力量可以和美国互相制约，在俄罗斯、印度、巴西和中国这几个正在上升的大国中，只有中国有这种可能。他还说，中国可能向好的方向发展，也可能向坏的方向发展，因此在中国迅速培养大批有道德和有效的管理者至关重要。这也是他后来全力支持我创办彼得·德鲁克管理学院的原因。
德鲁克管理学院开办不久，有一位著名商学院的教授建议我们走精英教育的路线，收昂贵的学费，德鲁克先生反对这么做。他对我说：“中国固然需要大公司和领导它们的精英人才，但中国像任何国家一样，90％的组织将是中小型的和地方性的，它们必须发挥作用，单靠大公司，不能提供一个健康社会所需要的各方面功能。
