翌年3月春分前，国际刑警组织巴黎总部向设在东京警视厅的日本支部发来了电传打字电报：

比利时古玩商D.马尔丹，搭20日起飞的比利时塞班纳航空公司三○一次班机飞往日本。据悉，该人系专门从事盗窃、走私、伪造美术工艺品和收购赃物的国际辛迪加组织的重要人犯，望对其在日行动予以监视。

有关该犯外貌特征和经历的卡片以及照片等，很快就用传真发来了。
"这件案子怎么处理？"主办该案的科员把上述文件递交给他的上司，请示办法，"是不是先通知警视厅外事课一下？"
"是啊。"股长转了转脖子，"从字面上看，倒像是个相当重要的大人物哩。但是，他这次来日本，到底要干什么呢？"
股长马上决定请巴黎方面进一步提供有关马尔丹的详细材料，同时，派人到机场进行监视。塞班纳航空公司经由南方飞来的三〇一次超音速客机，定于当天早晨到达位于成田市的东京第二国际机场。
出乎意料的是，当这架能容纳二百三十人的巨型波音 2707型SST（超音速客机）满载着乘客飞抵东京第二国际机场时，乘客中并不见 D.马尔丹的踪影。他们急忙向塞班纳航空公司客运处查询，才得知马尔丹有可能中途在加尔各答下了飞机。
虽然日本支部迅速对关西方面进行了部署，但是，关西第二国际机场已经到了许多架绕道东南亚的班机，大批旅客已从几个出口潮水般涌了出去。要想从中找出不知搭乘哪次航班的某个人来，谈何容易。
于是，日本支部暂时先对外国人检查站和机场警察署做了一番布置，通知他们在验护照时，如果发现该犯，立即进行报告。随后，人员编制很少的国际刑警组织日本支部这才解除了戒备状态。
"马尔丹这个古玩商，到底是什么人？"股长问那个美国支部派到日本来追捕嫌疑犯的男子。
"你说的是美术商人马尔丹吧？是安特卫普(注：比利时北部城市，重要港口之一)的 D.马尔丹吧？"这个新闻记者出身、入行已有十年的消息灵通人士眼睛瞪得大大的，"那可是个庞然大物啊，他干这套勾当早已是公开的秘密。他怎么啦？"
"巴黎总部说，他到日本来了。"
美国支部人员霍地吹了一声口哨，"这就怪了。我记得，远东不属于他的势力范围呀。千万得盯紧喽。没有大交易，他绝不会亲自出马。只要他出马，肯定是琢磨着把这个国家的国宝级艺术品一个不留地偷运到国外去。到日本来还是第一次吧？"
股长面色有些发青，再一次指示两处机场严密监视。
但就在稍早一些时候……
印度航空公司的巨型喷气式客机，摇晃着它那三百吨的庞大身躯，沐浴着夕晖徐徐降落在大阪港湾的关西第二国际机场。目标人物从头等舱走下飞机，一边笑容可掬地同戴着纱丽的女服务员应酬着，一边拿着改名换姓的假护照，混过了外国人检查站，轻轻松松地入了关。他把小皮箱往前来迎接他的车里一塞，一溜烟消失得无影无踪。关西机场外国人检查站，接到国际刑警组织日本支部送来的通缉令，那已是半个小时以后的事了。这时，马尔丹乘坐的小车早已向北疾驰而去。
飞机降落一小时后，马尔丹已经坐在位于六甲山坡上的一家俱乐部的幽静房间里。他一边观看海港初升的灯火，一边与一个高个、宽肩、看上去很年轻的日本人相对而坐。在这个头发半白、大眼睛、高鼻梁、宽嘴唇、身高一百九十厘米、体重一百一十公斤的人高马大的外国人面前，这个剪着短发的日本人，简直小得像个孩子。
"芳崖 (注：狩野芳崖，1829-1888，日本明治前期的著名画家) 和广重(注：歌川广重，1798-1858，日本江户时代末期浮世绘的代表画家，擅长风景和花鸟)，已经拜收无误……"马尔丹用他那乡音很重的英语说，"的确是珍品，我们的专家鉴定过，都是原作。"
"承蒙谬爱，不胜荣幸。"日本人用流畅的标准英语应酬着。
"那几张画，真是送我的吗？"马尔丹不放心地叮问了一句。
"是的，作为见面礼……"
"嗯……"马尔丹鼻子里哼了一声，他捉摸着对方的真正意图，"那么，这次的生意呢？说是可以进手大批日本艺术品……对吧？"
"是的。"对方胸有成竹地回答道，"我们知道您只抓最上等的艺术品，而且数量还相当大。我们觉得，这次搞到的一定完全符合您的要求。"
"东西是……画吗？"
"应有尽有。"对方回答说，"绘画、雕刻、佛像、工艺品……"
马尔丹嘟着嘴思忖起来，事情似乎顺利得让他怀疑其中设有圈套。
"那么，时间呢？"
"目前还不能肯定。正式成交恐怕要在一年或两年之后；但是我们完全有把握，只要需要，随时可以弄到。为了在东西到手时能够马上同你成交，希望能同您保持联系。这次所以特地请您跑一趟，是想尽量甩开经纪人，也不想为外人所知，这实在是因为国宝一级的艺术品太多了。"
马尔丹在心里揣摩着这家伙到底是什么人。此前，香港某大人物曾向他保证过对方的来历。但是，眼前这个人绝不是个偷鸡摸狗、杀人越货的小喽啰。这男子是个老板？抑或其背后还有什么人？
