《镜花缘》是清代长篇小说中十分奇特的一部，全书100回。《镜花缘》前半部分描写了唐敖、多九公等人乘船在海外游历的故事，包括他们在女儿国、君子国、无肠国等国的经历史。后半部写了武则天科举选才女，由百花仙子托生的唐小山及其他各花仙子托生的一百位才女考中，并在朝中有所作为的故事。全书以丰富的想象、幽默的笔调展示万般世相。其中突出地描摹了女子的才华，体现尊重女权的思想。最具文学史意义的是其中以奇幻的笔法，揭示了人间社会的种种风俗败坏和道德堕落，体现了对社会问题的思考，具有现实意义。此次重版，以经典的张友鹤先生校注本为基础，增加了数十幅精美的绣像插图，更臻完善。

Author Description

李汝珍（约1763—约1830），字松石，号松石道人，直隶大兴（今属北京市）人，人称北平子。他自由聪明好学，博览群书，多才多艺，但无意求取功名。他学问渊博，精通诗文、壬遁、星卜、象纬、音韵、书画及岐黄之术等，现存最著名的作品是《镜花缘》，此外还著有《李氏音鉴》、《受子谱》等。

张友鹤（1907─1971），安徽安庆人。著名的古典文学校注家，报人。1949年前曾担任《民生报》、《时事新报》的编辑和记者，还创办了《南京晚报》。1949以后校注出版了《唐宋传奇选》、《镜花缘》、《官场现形记》、《二十年目睹之怪现状》和《聊斋志异》等古典文学作品。

《镜花缘》：
牡丹仙子道：“此旨限期又迫，偏偏洞主又无下落，这却怎好？”桃花仙子道：“据小仙愚见：为今之计，惟有各司本花，前去承旨。况我们这座蓬莱，周围七万里，上面仙姑洞府，不计其数，焉能个个遍访。设或逾限，违了圣旨，岂同儿戏！此时即找著洞主，禀如此事，除承旨之外，安能另有别见。且洞主向来谨慎，从不越分妄为，岂有违旨之理！”杨花仙子在旁听了，不觉暗暗点头j牡丹仙子道：“话虽如此，洞主究系众人领袖，——岂可不候号令，擅自前去。不知兰、桂二位仙姑，可另有高见？”兰花仙子道：“小仙同桂花仙姑所司之花，原有‘四季’之名，四时莫不可放。此刻就去承旨，也无不合。但细细忖度，自应找寻洞主，禀知为是。况‘罚不责众’，如果立意都不承旨，谅那世主亦难遽将群芳尽废。且众姊妹虽以花卉为名，并非独供玩赏，其中隶于药品济世的亦复不少，若都废了，何以疗疾？以此看来，更可放心。况时值隆冬，概令群花齐放，未免时序颠倒。虽皇皇圣谕，究竟于理不顺，即使违误，谅难加罪。所谓‘言不顺则事不成’。——若‘名正言顺’，事在必行，我们一经闻命：自应即去承旨，又何须禀知洞主；现在行止在于两可，所以不能不候洞主之命：小仙拙见如此。”桂花、梅花、菊花，莲花四位仙子听了，莫不点头，都道：“仙姑所见极是。”只见杨花、芦花、藤花、蓼花、萱花、葵花、蘋花、菱花八位仙子，彼此交头接耳，商议多时，一齐说道：“诸位仙姑去不去，小仙也不敢勉强。但我等虽忝列群芳，质极贱微，道行本浅，位分又卑，既乏香艳之姿，兼无济世之用，何能当此违旨重谴？一经被谪，区区微末，岂能保全？再四斟酌，不能不筹‘且顾眼前’之计。此时业经交丑，——那旨内说：‘莫待晓风催。’——转瞬就要发晓，我们惟有各司本花，先去承旨。日后即使洞主责备，亦当垂鉴下情。且吾辈倘竟违旨，俱获重罪，洞主身为领袖，又安能置身事外？今既循分承旨，彼此均无过失，洞主犒赏不暇，岂有责备之理！”因向桃花仙子道：“适才仙姑曾言，惟恐逾限获罪，何不趁此结伴同行？”不由分说，即拉了桃花仙子，竟自一同而去。九位仙子刚去，只见上林苑土地并值日功曹也来相催。登时众仙子莫不纷纷前往。
那时天已渐晓，雪已住了。牡丹仙子向兰花仙子叹道：“众心不齐，又将奈何！小仙惟有再去寻访。至于行止，只好悉听诸位。”说著去了。兰花仙子等之许久，总无音信。功曹、土地，络绎来催。转眼间，红日已升，众花仙十去八九。洞中只剩桂花、梅花、菊花、莲花、海棠、芍药、水仙、蜡梅、玉兰、杜鹃、兰花，共十一位仙子。大家商议多时，并无良策，只得勉强一同去了。牡丹仙子又在四处访问，直到辰时，仍无影响。回到洞中，只剩两个女童看守洞门。呆了半晌，无计可施，惟恐违旨，只得也向上林苑而来。
武后自从上林苑回宫，睡到黎明，宿酒已消。猛然想起昨日写诏之事，连忙起来，心内著实懊悔：酒后举动，过于孟浪，倘群花竟不开放，将来传扬出去，这场羞愧，如何遮掩？正在寻思，早有上林苑、群芳圃司花太监来报，各处群花大放。武后这一喜非同小可！登时把公主宣来，用过早膳，齐到上林苑。只见满园青翠萦目，红紫迎人，真是锦绣乾坤，花花世界。天时甚觉和暖，池沼都已解冻，陡然变成初春光景。正是：池鱼戏叶仍含冻，谷鸟啼花乍报春。
