算上北大版，这已经是第六个版本了。这册小书，1992年由人民文学出版社初刊，1995年由台北的麦田出版社推出繁体字本，1997年河北人民出版社刊行三卷本《陈平原小说史论集》时将其收录，此乃本书的“基本型”。十年后，也就是2002年9月，新世界出版社发行装帧精美的“插图珍藏本”，算是“改进版”。到了去年春夏间，几乎同时，北京大学出版社和百花文艺出版社分别找上门来，希望重刊此书。双方协商，达成以下协议：“百花”刊行插图本，只收初版本文，取其赏心悦目；“北大”兼收各种附录，增加索引，突出学术性。
我之谈论“武侠”，除了这册小书，只有《中国现代学术之建立》中的《晚清志士的游侠心态》、《当代中国人文观察》中的《武侠小说与功夫电影》，还有就是《作为学科的“文学史”》中的《“通俗小说”在中国》。二十年间，如此成绩，实在寒碜。说白了，不够忠诚，也有欠专精，那是因为，我并不希望以此为“主业”。至于为何以及如何借“武侠”谈小说类型，而又兼及思想文化，当初以《我与武侠小说》作为人文版的“代序”，以及撰写《我与武侠小说研究》作为新世界版的“后记”，再加上《武侠小说与中国文化》等七则附录，该说的都说了，再往下絮叨，就讨人嫌了。
问我的研究体会，就一句话：观赏通俗小说（武侠或言情）及类型电影（侦探或惊悚），可能很愉悦；作为研究对象，却不怎么好玩。既怕缺乏理论自觉，一味复述迷人的故事；又怕沉湎其中，走火入魔，立说时“过度阐释”。如此古今对话、文史沟通，分寸感很重要，如何拿捏，端看学者的志趣与功力。以我的能力，也就到此为止，因此，只好暂时告别那些“拔剑四顾心茫然”的游侠了。

《千古文人侠客梦(增订本)》的内容主要包括两个方面：一是纵向梳理侠之观念的形成，探讨唐宋以迄于20世纪武侠小说的发展；二是横向探讨武侠小说中行侠的手段、主题、背景及过程。全书将小说形态学的研究与文化发生学的探讨相结合，是一部视野广阔、研究扎实的武侠小说研究著作。

Author Description

陈平原，广东潮州人，文学博士，北京大学中文系教授及系主任、教育部“长江学者”特聘教授、香港中文大学讲座教授、中国俗文学学会会长。近年关注的课题包括20世纪中国文学、中国小说与中国散文、现代中国教育及学术、图像与文字等。曾被国家教委和国务院学位委员会评为“作出突出贡献的中国博士学位获得者”（1991），获全国高校第一、二、三届人文社会科学研究优秀著作奖（1995、1998、2003），第一、二届王瑶学术奖优秀论文一等奖（2002、2006），北京市第九届哲学社会科学优秀成果一等奖（2006），第三届全国教育科学研究优秀成果二等奖（2006），高等学校科学研究优秀成果（人文社会科学）一等奖（2009）等。先后出版《中国小说叙事模式的转变》、《千古文人侠客梦》、《中国现代学术之建立》、《中国散文小说史》、《触摸历史与进入五四》、《大学何为》、《北京记忆与记忆北京》、《左图右史与西学东渐》等著作30种。另外，出于学术民间化的追求，1991——2000年与友人合作主编人文集刊《学人》，2001年起主编学术集刊《现代中国》。治学之余，撰写随笔，借以关注现实人生，并保持心境的洒脱与性情的温润。

Book Abstract

《千古文人侠客梦（增订本）》：
龚自珍的诗句“一箫一剑平生意，负尽狂名十五年”（《漫感》），可以说相当准确地表达了中国古代文人理想的人生境界。对于文人来说，“箫”易得而“剑”难求，于是诗文中充斥着“剑”的意象。“仗剑”与“行侠”并不完全一致，可诗文中这两者往往相通，故可互相参照。同样一个“抚剑独行游”（陶潜《拟古》），可能是表达其建功立业的愿望，也可能是发泄其豪壮狂荡之气，还可能是欣赏其阔大雄奇的美感效果——有时甚至是三者的混合。
借“侠”或“剑”表达建功立业愿望者，因其着眼点不同而分化成歌颂功德与发泄悲愤两类。宋人郭茂倩编《乐府诗集》，收《白马篇》九首、《少年行》三十首，多与边关战事联系在一起，“言人当立功立事”（《乐府解题》），于是充满“不许跨天山，何由报皇德”（王僧孺）、“归报明天子，燕然石复刊”（徐悱）之类志得意满的诗句。可借“剑”与“侠”感叹怀才不遇的诗篇，显然更为源远流长：阮籍之感叹无法“挥剑临沙漠，饮马九野垌”（《咏怀》），李白之吟咏“抚剑夜长啸，雄心日千里，誓欲斩鲸鲵，澄清洛阳水”（《赠张相镐之二》），以至明人徐渭的“客散平原夜，波寒易水风。秦仇不能报，泪落酒杯红”（《赋得看剑引杯长》），清人黄仲则的“匣中鱼鳞淬秋水，十年仗之走江海。尘封绣涩未摩挲，一道练光飞不起”（《以所携剑赠容甫》），还有龚自珍的“少年击剑更吹箫，剑气箫心一例消。谁分苍凉归棹后，万千哀乐集今朝”（《己亥杂诗》），不管得意还是失意，“仗剑”与“行侠”都是凭借自身能力去夺取功名，而不是攀附权贵或者依赖祖宗福荫。因此，诗人于古代侠客中多取“闾巷之侠”，而很少取“卿相之侠”。张华的《游侠篇》甚至对谈侠士者推崇“翩翩四公子”表示不以为然。这就很好理解为什么“仗剑”与“行侠”这一意象会千百年来激动着千百万出身寒门并与功名富贵无缘的文人学子之心。
