欢迎来到Tinkercad的世界！
大概20多年前，那时我还在大学里面学习工程学。其中有一门课是我们这个专业的学生所不得不学的，我记得那是一门绘图课程。它要求我们用一种特殊的铅笔（不是常见的2s铅笔）和一些三角板、直尺之类的工具，来手绘出生活中各种常见物体的形状。刚开始我们都会找些简单的东西来画，像立方体、金字塔之类的画得缓慢但用了很多高级的绘画技巧。现在想来，这确实是一门很有趣的课，但同时也很乏味。有些时候我可以通过橡皮擦来搞定一些错误，但更多的时候还是推倒了重来更简单，尤其是在画一些复杂的图纸时，只要前面有一两个尺寸在测量上出现了差错，整张图都将难以为继。
就在这门课程临近结束的时候，导师告诉我们下学年学校将会开设一门特别的课程，名字叫做CAD，即计算机辅助设计（Computer Aided Design），也有人称之为计算机辅助绘图（Computer Aided Drafting）。他补充道，选那门课的学生应该已经掌握了一些基本的专业知识，于是教授就贴了三张巨大的图纸在墙上，用作测试用的例题。这三张图每一张都完整地显示了一个大立方体的向视图，有俯视图、主视图、左视图等。而这个大立方体的每一个面又都由九个小的面组成，就像是一个魔方，如图0-1所示。
可根据图纸来看，又有些许不同，它好像缺少了几个小的立方体。这就展现出了一幅奇怪的景象：一个大的立方体，在每一个面上都少了几个小的立方体。学生们有60秒的时间通过这仅有的主视图、俯视图和左视图来画出这个3D的立方体模型。我知道教授正在测试我们的空间想象能力：根据这三个投影视图，在脑海中构建出物体的3D模型，并把这种想象体在纸上画出来。
我没有参加这项测试，因为我对这门课程不感兴趣。但是后来听那些选了CAD课的同学说，这门课十分有趣，而且很有挑战性（这种说法足以形容绝大多数工程专业的课程）。主要内容就是在电脑屏幕上画各种东西，先通过捕捉并定义出物体的特征点，然后再用线将点连起来。听起来好像很难，而且很费时间，但同时也很无聊……但大多数学生还是说这比在初级水平课上用手画要快得多，
今天的CAD应用软件比20年前的可要先进得多。现在的应用软件功能非常强大，可以帮你做很多工作（像画一个完美的圆，一段精确长度为1.275英寸的线段），并且允许你在电脑屏幕上建立一个尚未真实存在的物体的3D模型。
很多人都说要学会CAD软件很难。但在过去的几年时间里，我试着去自学很多CAD软件，虽然也获得了成功，但有些时候确实很让人沮丧，掌握它们也确实需要花费大量的时间。直到不久前，任何人想要通过操作这些软件来建立3D模型，都必须付出时间和汗水，有时还要为这些软件付一笔实际的费用，如果他们的学校或者工作场所没有提供的话。
但是现在，不再是这样了。今天的一些CAD应用可以说是为初学者量身打造的，而且较之早期的版本，也更为亲民并减少了用户的不适应感。它们只需要更少的时间就能熟练掌握，而且在很多情况下都是免费使用的。在这些新式的CAD应用中，有一款就是Tinkercad。
