本书同名展览 “大英博物馆100件文物中的世界史”3月起登陆中国，是本年度超五星推荐的文化盛事。中英双方工作人员通力合作，100件珍贵藏品已经运达中国，将在北京和上海进行为期长达半年的展览。

这是一项“全世界只有大英博物馆才能办到的世界史撰写计划”，以广播形式在BBC播出时，创下了1100万人口同时收听的纪录，《纽约时报》盛赞其为“罕见的巨献”。

Author Description

尼尔·麦格雷戈（NeilMacGregor），大英博物馆馆长，伦敦古文物学会成员，英国知名艺术史学者。
1946年出生于苏格兰格拉斯哥。在牛津大学研修德文与法文，后在法国巴黎高等师范学校攻读哲学，之后在爱丁堡大学修习法律，1972年取得苏格兰律师执照。1973年在英国首屈一指的艺术史学院考陶德艺术学院研修艺术史。
1975年至1981年，在英国雷丁大学教授艺术与建筑史。1981年至1987年，主编英语世界历史悠久的美术及装饰艺术期刊《伯林顿杂志》。1987年至2002年，主持英国国家美术馆。2002年至今，任大英博物馆馆长。2010年，获英国女王颁赠功绩勋章。
主要作品有《目睹拯救：艺术作品中的基督形象》《大师之作的诞生》《英国绘画》《莎士比亚的动荡世界》等。

Book Abstract

因其对光线与湿度极为敏感，我们将它保存在大英博物馆的手卷室里。这间屋子干燥且密不通风，最重要的是室内全黑，十分适合在潮湿状况下会腐烂、强光下会褪色的莎草纸。这是我们在布鲁姆斯伯里能营造出的最接近古埃及墓室的环境了，因为之前它极可能在墓室里待了大部分时间。整个手卷原长约五米，通常会被卷成卷轴。如今则分为了三部分。较大的两部分保存在大英博物馆，被镶嵌在玻璃框里（第三部分则在纽约的布鲁克林博物馆）。纸草书高约三十厘米，凑近了还能看到纸莎草的纤维。
制作莎草纸是繁重的体力活儿，但程序却很简单。这种植物是芦苇的一种，能长到四米五，在尼罗河三角洲极为常见。将它的茎髓撕成条，然后浸泡、挤压，形成薄纸，接着晾干，再用石块把表面打磨光滑。纸莎草的有机纤维会自然地缠绕在一起，不需要胶水黏合，十分方便。最后我们得到的便是一张极适合书写的光滑纸面。莎草纸在地中海地区广泛使用，直到一千年前才被替代。莎草纸也是欧洲各国语言中“纸”一词的来源。
